After several years of drought conditions , California received a record amount of rainfall during the winter of 2016-17 . When the moisture soaked into the ground , it woke up long-dormant grasses and wildflowers , and they were ready to party . Dull brown hillsides and valleys erupted in a kaleidoscope of colors during a rare and short-lived “ superbloom .” Looky-loos flocked to places like the Carrizo Plain National Monument to capture the moment for Instagram . With a mix of paved and unpaved roads and wide-open scenery , the Carrizo Plain was also a great location to test adventure bikes like the KTM 1090 Adventure R and Honda Africa Twin .
