Neil says he got comments about his age on the Silk Road tour . During border crossings officials often did a double-take and scrutinized his face when they saw the date of birth on his passport . One of them exclaimed “ 1944 !” and gave him a thumbs up . In China , Neil was past the legal age for a motor vehicle operators permit , a situation for which a few hundred American dollars placed into the right hand provided an exception . The photos from the tour that Neil posted on Facebook would make anyone with wanderlust envious , and he shares one of his many once-in-a-lifetime stories from that trip in this issue ’ s Exhaust Note column .
