Located in southeastern Europe and bordered by the Adriatic Sea , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Serbia , Kosovo and Albania , Montenegro is covered with mountains that rival the majesty of the Alps . Its crown jewel is Durmitor National Park , a UNESCO World Heritage Site that protects an enormous limestone massif riddled with rugged peaks , glacial lakes and deep canyons , including the Tara River gorge — at 4,300 feet the deepest in Europe and second only to the Grand Canyon .
