Fass's Binder August. 2014 | Page 6

Throughout the film it is clear that despite her actions Maria does love Hermann. He eventually gets out of jail and the audience sees the turmoil that follows. The movie comes to a shocking end that we at Fass’s Binder believe provokes all the emotions Fassbinder was going for.

This film is truly an expression of the difficulties people and Germany as a whole had after the second World War. We see rebuilding and adjusting on a personal level in the film. This film also shows the struggles of being a woman in modern society and explores just how far one will go to achieve her goals and dreams. By the end of the film we are rooting for Maria to become a happy and successful person and wife, only to watch the ending in dismay. Despite this The Marriage of Maria Braun was nominated for a Golden Globe and took home several German awards

Bottom Line:

An interesting film but certainly wouldn't watch it again. We suggest a bottle of wine to accompany this one- You'll need it for the end.
