Its wondrous and refreshing to hear female
musicians break past that ‘singer-songwriter’
cliché’ and make music that is relevant,
unique and powerful. Gabriella Cohen is
an enigmatic songstress singing songs of
bittersweet woes with pop sensibilities.
Taking inspiration from the greats before her,
she weaves pop melodies with honest lyricism
to create a unique and infectious sound.
I was first introduced to Gabriella Cohen years
ago, as we both trotted up the hill at QUT,
Kelvin Grove. Since then (as well as working
tirelessly on her solo album) she’s completed
a degree in music, recorded several EP’s with
her band The Furrs, been published in Rolling
Stone Australia and has an American tour
lined up for 2015.
Written in a moment of self-doubt and
anxiousness, Cohen’s debut single ‘Bitter
Blues’ was independently released in October
of this year. “Songs will come when I need
them most. I never force them. They work as
an outlet for my emotions. They are a part of
me I will carry around forever.” As well as The
Furrs and her solo project, Cohen is hugely
passionate about female artists generally
kicking ass and hopes to start an all girl band
in the not so distant future. “Whenever I play
music with my female comrades we’re all
struck with this wondrous joy. Bewildered
almost, until we realize that it’s because we are
all on the same wavelength…. I feel like I can
speak for most women musicians when I say
that we are all looking for that comradeship
that we see in boy bands. And then it dawns
on us if we push away our pride we can
have that matriarchy with a group of female
musicians. It’ll be wild”
It goes without saying that Cohen’s musical
genius and infectious sound will take the
world by storm. With dreams bigger than
the city she lives in and sheer talent oozing
from her core, everybody keep your eyes on
Brisbane’s Gabriella Cohen.
