ARTICLE FOR GARMENT SPECIFICATION
In our group we came up with ideas to change a garment, however firstly we had to find garments to create a vlog about. Once we had chosen our three garments, we had three questions that we needed to answer in our video, we all took it in turns to speak about one of the garments. I spoke about a shirt from Topshop that could have been worn by male or female. Otis was the model for this garment, we both spoke about the garment and how it looks and what we would do differently.
The video was created in different clips with small breaks to break up the talking, we included short videos of the garments so that viewers could see exactly what was wrong with the garment and what they thought they would do about it.
I chose to change the buttons because they would be hard to buy so I would change them to easier sewn in buttons because they are easier to mend and if one button cracks, it is simple to find another button that is similar or identical. It is easier to find plastic buttons for shirts, rather than metal ones because of the production and where they have come from.
I also thought that the destressing of the rips didn't bring out the style because they were hidden away and not portrayed on the shirt as much as I would have preferred. So I said that the rips should be scattered around the body of the jacket where is it more noticeable and doesn't look isolated.
We also agreed to change the pockets and have one instead of two or even none because the shirt didn't need a lot added on to it as it was a simple denim shirt however if somebody wanted more on there, in my opinion I would have more distressing and less pockets. The denim shirt was simple for me even with or without pockets, although pockets can be helpful to keep small amounts of change in or other random bits, the pockets were not something to admire or notice as a nice piece of material. It seemed like the pockets were being used for practicality rather than a stylish feature.
The other garments we chose were a blouse and cardigan. The blouse had missing buttons so the blouse couldn’t gather up the sleeve and form nice layers, however in the video you can see that the sleeves looked nice without a button to hold it up, the material had also ripped this could indicate that the material wasn’t strong enough for the layers that were around the waist.
The other garment was a cardigan and this had a ripped pocket, this could be because the garment had two different materials and the materials were working against each other instead of working together, we agreed that the garment needed stronger sewing to keep it together.
Once we had finished observing the products, we came to a conclusion that lots of the material and features had to be taken away to reduce defects and/or take away unnecessary features that over crowded the garment.
