Seekers of serious peace and quiet should look no further than Khanom
Home to just a handful of hotels there ’ s definitely no need to reserve a sun lounger at first light , and amongst the sheltered bays and frequently deserted beaches , you ’ ll often see only your own footprints in the sand . The scenery isn ’ t too shabby either , with soaring limestone mountains peering over palm-tree lined roads , lush coconut or rubber plantations and stilted wooden houses . Inland , explore stalactite caves , waterfalls and natural exfoliating fish spas in mountain rivers . The offshore waters are a breeding ground for pink dolphins , a rare albino variety with a striking pink hue . Your best chance of a closer encounter with these elusive creatures is to take a boat trip . For a flavour of local life , visit one of the regular markets and browse stalls of exotic foodstuffs , or wander to the harbour to watch fishermen unload their catch of the day . After dark , if it ’ s a party scene you ’ re after , then you ’ ll be disappointed . Away from the hotels , you will , however , find a handful of bars and restaurants , particularly around Nadan Beach .

Getting there : Approximately 1 hour by road from Surat Thani airport . Khanom is also 1½ hours by ferry from Koh Samui , or 3½ hours from Koh Phangan or Koh Tao . It is the nearest beach resort to Elephant Hills .
Best time to go : Khanom enjoys good weather most of the year ; however , from November-mid-December it can be rather windy . The peak dry season is from March-May but even during the traditional rainy season ( June-October ) it usually only rains for a short period in the afternoon .
