A city full of diversions, Pattaya has fantastic beaches, brilliant shopping and has long been a party hotspot. North Pattaya is the most peaceful, yet far from secluded, with Central and South Pattaya regarded as the resort’ s hub with many hotels, markets, shopping malls, bars, restaurants, activities and entertainment vying for your attention. Nearby Jomtien is quieter and popular with watersport enthusiasts. Pretty Koh Samet is a designated national park boasting dazzlingly white beaches lapped by warm aquamarine sea and shaded by palms or cajeput( samet) trees. In the far east of the Gulf of Thailand, near the Cambodian border, is Koh Chang( Elephant Island). Getting there: The road transfer from Bangkok to Pattaya takes about 1½ hours. For Koh Samet the drive is about 2¼ hours followed by a boat journey. All visitors to Koh Samet must pay an entrance fee locally( approx £ 5). For Koh Chang the flight from Bangkok to Trat takes 45 minutes, followed by a road transfer and sea crossing. Private transfers are included to Pattaya. The road transfers for Koh Samet and Koh Chang are private but onward boat transfers are shared.
Best time to go: The cool season( November-February) is considered the best time to visit with low humidity and temperatures around 31 º C. The rainy season( April-October) brings brief downpours plus lots of sun.
