Malaysia- Penang

Penang

A fascinating fusion of east and west
Home to golden sands, UNESCO sites, diverse architecture, a national park and exceptional cuisine, the“ Pearl of the Orient” will suit those seeking a chilled-out beach break, cultural getaway or both!
Sweeping along a stretch of the northern coast, Batu Ferringhi is the island’ s best beach and a great place for watersports. Jellyfish do occasionally wash in on some tides which can affect swimming, however, all of our featured hotels have fantastic pool areas and are right on the beachfront.
The island’ s capital, George Town, is not to be missed. Awarded UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008, the historic centre is a maze of narrow streets, temples, mosques, colonial architecture and epitomises old-world Asia( see page 103 for our recommended short tour).
Discover more of the island with a trip on the 2,270ft funicular railway at Penang Hill which rewards with breathtaking views. Visit the unique Snake Temple to meet its slithery residents, admire the magnificent Buddhist temple Kek Lok Si or enjoy the natural splendour of Penang National Park which, despite its compact size, has an impressive range of wildlife and can be explored on foot or by boat.
If shopping is your thing, Penang has a good mix of modern malls, quaint antique stalls, traditional bazaars and street markets, with Little India or Chinatown in the heart of George Town recommended. After dark the Jalan Batu Ferringhi Road comes to life with a nightly market where stalls brim with souvenirs, clothes and handicrafts. The area bustles as people dine and drink at the array of restaurants and cafes or sample delights from the sizzling hawker stalls. Night owls will also love Penang’ s enticing selection of rooftop cocktail lounges, beach bars and live music venues.
