KATHERINE FORD ’ S CHRONICLE
Flashback on the major players of the 2024 season across the Channel on the occasion of the Cartier Awards .
Like in France , the UK is at the seasonal crossroads between flat racing , which concluded with the prestigious events and official rankings at Champions Day in Ascot in October , and jump racing , which is just beginning to showcase its stars — both equine and human — as winter approaches . On the flat , the more subjective honors of the Cartier Awards were bestowed at a refined ceremony in London in November . Unsurprisingly , City of Troy , a name that dominated conversations throughout the season , was crowned Cartier Horse of the Year .
Although the son of Justify fell short of legendary status after his defeat in the Breeders ’ Cup Classic , the Aidan O ’ Brien and Coolmore representative remains an indisputable champion , having claimed four Gr . 1 victories , including “ The Derby ” ( at Epsom ). Now , his challenge will be to follow in the footsteps of his maternal grandsire Galileo , whose loss on American dirt didn ’ t hinder his illustrious career as a sire .
Interestingly , five of the seven Cartier Award winners-Charyn , Bradsell , Porta Fortuna , Lake Victoria , and City of Troy-capped off their seasons with bold international attempts following successful campaigns in Europe . Of these , only Lake Victoria returned victorious , but the others lost none of their popularity or acclaim and continued to inspire fans worldwide .
