Kerie-Ann ‘Kiki’ Lewis is the kind of girl who can
change a car tyre all by herself, install dry wall,
lay tiles and other types of construction activities
and keep her home clean and tidy for her husband and
children. Still, in no time, the warm, down-to-earth, practical
homebody transforms into the suave television host most
Jamaicans know and admire as ‘Kiki’.
Describing herself as pretty ‘hardcore’ Kiki grew up as your
typical tomboy preferring to wear boys’ clothes and to hang out
with her father. Home life as a child was far from easy however,
with physical abuse causing many altercations between her and
her dad, ultimately leading to Kiki being on her own from she
was 15-years-old. In trying to secure her independence and
make ends meet, the then teenager made some decisions that
would result in her spending 2 years in an American prison for
drug trafficking. But perhaps the most heartrending knock that
she endured was finding out that she was pregnant a week after
being arrested and then having to give up her first baby boy.
In spite of the traumatic experience however – Kiki believes that
being in jail brought peace to her life. “In a very weird way it
was 2 years of the most peace I’ve probably had internally in my
entire life, because my entire life up until that point was chaotic,
literally,” she told Family and Faith Magazine.
“I had to surrender,” she explained. “There was nothing I could
do. I couldn’t open my cell and walk out like I please. Anyone
who tells you they have found God while they were in jail, they
are not joking. You find Him you know what I mean, I did, but
I knew Him from before, so this was just strengthening that
walk. You really don’t have anything else. It’s really you and God
and you work and build on that relationship and that is what
becomes more real and vivid,” she remembered.
Several years after that disturbing life-changing ordeal, Kiki
has turned over a new leaf which included being baptized by
Pastor Ryan Mark of Pure in Heart Ministries International late
last year. Honoured to use her skills for the Lord, the media
personality has also been busy hosting several gospel events
and recently organized an impactful women’s empowerment
conference. Outside of all these public activities however, Kiki is
focused on her family.
