The Green Revival of a Century-Old Strathcona Home .
In the heart of Strathcona , Vancouver , a 100-year-old home has found new life through the vision of its sustainability-driven owners . This three-bedroom , three-and-a-half-bath home underwent a meticulous renovation , with the goal of preserving as much of its original structure and features as possible . One of the most significant elements retained was the grand staircase , where the existing newel posts and handrails were carefully re-used and refinished , bringing back their classic elegance .
In the primary ensuite , the owners wanted to keep the claw-foot tub , a standout feature of the original home . This required a significant effort , as the tub had to be re-enamelled and repainted , then carefully maneuvered back up the narrow staircase into its rightful place in the bathroom . The result was worth the effort , as the restored tub now stands as a testament to the home ' s history .
To source building supplies , the team turned to Greenworks , a local company that specializes in environmentally friendly products . For demolition , Unbuilders , a deconstruction company , ensured that as much material as possible was reused or recycled , reducing waste significantly . Farrow and Ball paint , known for its low-VOC content , provided the perfect hues to bring warmth and character to the interiors . Daltile , with its 98 % recycled content , was used for tiling , offering a durable yet environmentally conscious choice . The wood finishes were completed with Osmo , another product made with 98 % recycled content , ensuring the use of sustainable materials without compromising on quality . Even the countertops reflected the green ethos , with Paperstone providing surfaces made from 100 % recycled paper and resin . This approach not only minimized the environmental impact but also highlighted the beauty of reusing and repurposing materials in creative ways .
