PAGE 15 FALL 2020 Italian American Digest Italian American Digest Writer Wins Award By Samuel Puliafico ©2018 IMPORTED BY BIRRA PERONI INTERNAZIONALE, WASHINGTON, DC The Green Eyeshade Awards are given out by the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), the oldest organization representing journalists in the US (1909.) This is the 70th year the SPJ has awarded the Green Eyeshade Awards. They are given to journalists in the Southeastern US (Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia. Italian American Digest contributor, Enrico Villamaino, won several awards at this event. He won first place in the "Best Feature Writer in the South" category for three pieces he wrote for Lee Newspapers. Enrico also won second place in the "Best News Reporter in the South" two articles he wrote for the Italian American Digest. One winning piece came from the IAD Summer 2019 issue and covered Mayor Cantrell's proclamation of apology for the 1891 lynchings of Italians in New Orleans. The other winning article is from the IAD Winter 2019 issue, highlighting the accomplishments of Italian t\ Tulane Archaeology Professor, Francisco Estrada-Belli. The IAD and the AICC are extremely proud and congratulate Enrico on this accomplishment! Learn Italiano at the AICC! Did you know...Mardi Gras has its roots in Italy’s Carnevale? The celebration was first celebrated in Venice in 1094. Carnevale spread from medieval Italy to the French Bourbon reign and eventually to the French colonies, including Louisiana!! Learn more about Italian culture and Italy’s connection to New Orleans through the American Italian Cultural Center’s 2020 Italian language classes. All classes have a friendly, motivating atmosphere. Our small class sizes allow for personalized instruction and foster friendships amongst students and the teacher. Courses are held at the American Italian Cultural Center located at 537 S. Peters St. in Downtown New Orleans & the Italian American Bocce Club of Greater New Orleans located at 2340 Severn Avenue, Metairie. Each class will include a total of eight 1.5 hour sessions.
