What do you find most challenging about municipal law enforcement ( or your current position )?
Some challenges include dealing with difficult or uncooperative property owners , navigating complex and ever-changing bylaws and regulations ( for example , during the COVID-19 pandemic ), overcrowded properties and their side effects on neighbors , managing a large workload and prioritizing tasks , and addressing conflicts between neighbors or tenants ( under the purview of City by-laws ). Additionally , enforcing property standards in a fair and consistent manner whilst maintaining positive community relations can also present challenges .
If you could either change or enhance one thing about the role of an MLEO , what would it be ?
One thing I would change about the role of MLEO is getting more respect from public . The provincial and municipal governments should engage in educational campaigns to create awareness highlighting the importance of MLEOs in a community . MLEOs contribute to overall quality of life by upholding local laws , promoting safety , resolving conflicts , and fostering community engagement . Our presence and dedication ensure that communities are well-maintained and a harmonious place to live . It is crucial for citizens to recognize that without MLEOs there would be chaos .
Tell us about an investigation that you were successful with in which you will remember for the rest of your career .
One of the most memorable investigations of my policing career was when I had just assumed the charge of a police post and due to political pressures , I had to undertake a murder investigation . I managed to lead my team to resolve the murder in under 48 hours , exhume the body of the young 12-year-old victim , and arrest his mother for the heinous crime . Here in Brampton , I investigated a lodging house by gathering proper evidence and statements , duly supported by my supervisor . However , the ownership of the property was a corporation , and three out of the four directors were reputed lawyers . They opted for a trial . There was a prejudicial trial in which ultimately decided to plead guilty . I will never forget these cases for the rest of my career .
What other career choices did you consider before becoming an MLEO ?
Having an education in engineering and ample experience in policing , I was a confused landed immigrant trying to look for a career . Friends guided me to complete the process of becoming a professional engineer which would take years to complete . Meanwhile , some urged me to get an AZ licence to get into the transportation industry . I got my AZ while still working in healthcare security , but I still had a passion for investigation and law enforcement . I got selected through the process for the Transportation Enforcement Officer job ( pool ) with MTO . While attending the MLEOA foundation course , I met some awesome people who guided me and instilled me with confidence . I got a job as a part-time parking control officer with the Town of Aurora and since then — I have never looked back .
You are asked by a group of high school students why they should consider MLE as a career direction how would you respond ?
A career in MLE can be incredibly fulfilling and rewarding . You are presented with an opportunity to directly impact your community
