AQUATICS

Level 1: Learn to Swim
Sundays 11:45 – 12:15 PM Frances A Lewis Lap Pool Ages: 5 + • 8 weeks
For the first swimmers
This class is for the first time swimmer that doesn’ t know how to swim. Skills to be taught in this level include entering and exiting the water, blowing bubbles, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front and back gliding, back floating, rolling from front to back and back to front, treading water, alternating simultaneous arm and leg actions on front and back, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety topics.

Level 2: Fundamental Aquatics Skills
Sundays, 11:45 AM – 12:15 PM Frances A Lewis Lap Pool Ages: 5 + • 8 weeks
For beginner swimmers
This class is for the child who can swim independently and has not mastered his / her stroke techniques. Skills to be taught include entering and exiting the water, submerging, bobbing, opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects, front, jellyfish, and tuck floating, front kicking and gliding, back kicking, and gliding, rolling from front to back and back to front, rotary breathing, treading water, combining arm and leg actions on front and back and age-appropriate water safety skills.
Level 3: Stroke Development
Sundays, 12:15 – 12:45 PM Frances A Lewis Lap Pool Ages: 5 + • 8 weeks
For Intermediate Swimmers
The objectives of Learn-to- Swim Level 3 are to expand the proficiency of previously learned skills by providing additional guided practice. Participants learn and practice survival floating and learn to swim front crawl and elementary backstroke at rudimentary proficiency levels. We begin the introduction of the scissors and dolphin kicks and extend the time duration for treading water. Participants also learn rules for headfirst entries and begin to learn to enter the water headfirst from a seated position at poolside. As in all levels, new and previously addressed water safety topics are included. Participants who successfully complete Level 3 have achieved basic water competency in a pool environment.

Level 4: Stroke Improvement
( equivalent to Pre-Fins Beg. Novice) Sundays, 12:15 – 12:45 PM Frances A Lewis Lap Pool Ages: 5 + • 8 weeks
In Learn-to-Swim Level 4, participants improve their aquatic skills and increase their endurance by swimming the strokes learned in Level 3( i. e., front crawl, elementary backstroke) for greater distances and with more advanced proficiency. Participants add arm actions to the previously learned scissors kick and breaststroke kick to perform the rudimentary sidestroke and to learn the breaststroke. Participants also begin to learn the back crawl and butterfly, as well as the basics of performing a simple open turn at a wall.
