MWIS / CDABP TRAININGS Principles of Bidding & Estimating Workshop
The process of bidding and estimating is essential in the construction industry. Bidding allows contractors to compete for projects, and accurate estimates give them a competitive advantage in winning contracts by presenting competitive and realistic pricing. Accurate estimation helps to control costs throughout the project lifecycle, and ensure that the project is completed within the budget and agreed upon timeline.
The principles of bidding and estimating were covered in-depth by MWIS Field Support Project Executive, Robert Lowery, and Senior Contractor Development Manager, Jane Olayiwola. Held on May 29, 2025, the webinar was a component of the LA Regional Contractor Development and Bonding Program( CDABP), which MWIS administers on behalf of the City of Los Angeles, LA Metro, and the County of Los Angeles.
Topics covered included: delivery models, types of bidding and estimating software, how to set up an estimate, determine cost, insurance and bonds needed, and pricing.
“ Bidding is the process of providing a potential customer with a proposal to build or manage the building of a structure,” noted Olayiwola.“ It’ s also a method through which subcontractors pitch their services to general contractors.”
Robert Lowery, Field Support Project Executive for MWIS, discussed the three major decisions that shape construction bidding.
