Inaugural Shotgun Shoot at Annual Meeting was a Blast !

The idea to give SBAND ’ s non-golfing members an opportunity to socialize the Wednesday afternoon of the annual meeting was kicked around by the board of governors after the 2023 Annual Meeting . That idea became reality at the 2024 Annual Meeting with the inaugural shotgun shoot at The Shooting Park in Horace , just outside of Fargo . SBAND board members Josh Frey and Paul Myerchin served as hosts .
Nine members participated in the first annual event , enjoying a windy Wednesday afternoon out on the course . The nine included : Tim Richard ( UND Class of ‘ 97 ); Austan Wellman ( UND Class of ‘ 20 ); Todd Ewell ( Univ . of Mississippi School of Law Class of ‘ 03 ); Travis Finck ( UND Class of ‘ 07 ); Beau Cummings ( UND Class of ‘ 19 ); Daniel Howell ( Texas A & M Univ . Class of ‘ 19 ); Zachary Shereck ( Ramsey County State ’ s Attorney Office – Legal Intern ); Josh Frey ( UND Class of ‘ 15 ); and Paul Myerchin ( UND Class of ‘ 97 ).
The shooters took advantage of the trap , 5-stand , and skeet fields on a blustery North Dakota summer day . While the golfers were contending with their hooks and slices in the windy weather , the shotgunners were contending with their clay targets dancing like yo-yos thanks to Mother Nature . In fact , the “ springing teal ” on the 5-stand station became nearly impossible to hit due to the wind . Although the wind caused plenty of misses , some outstanding shots were made , too .
The best part of the day was the camaraderie on and off the course . The criminal defense bar was well represented in Travis Finck and Todd Ewell , director and deputy director , respectively , of the

Indigent Defense Commission , and Paul Myerchin , private practice in Bismarck , as were the prosecutors in Josh Frey , McHenry County state ’ s attorney , and Beau Cummings and Daniel Howell , Ramsey County state ’ s attorney and assistant state ’ s attorney , respectively . As in the practice of law , the prosecutors and criminal defense attorney got along beautifully .
Since no rules were broken out on the course , the prosecutors didn ’ t have to issue any warrants or complaints , and the criminal defense attorneys didn ’ t have to invoke any 4th , 5th , or 6th Amendment privileges . The event ended with some burgers and drink from The Shooting Park ’ s bar and grill . In addition , all shooters received Ducks Unlimited swag , and the top three shooters were awarded Scheels gift cards . The top shooters were : First Place – Travis Finck ; Second Place – Todd Ewell ; and Third Place – Josh Frey .
The day was a blast for the first annual shotgun shoot . Please mark your calendar and join us out on the Capital City Sporting Clays course ( north of Menoken , just east of Bismarck ) the afternoon of June 11 , 2025 . I guarantee a great time will be had by all !
