Teacher: Who would like to start our conversation about Miss Rumphius?

Student 1: Um, what part?

Teacher: We can start wherever you’d like.

Student 2: She was nice, and she cared about the planet.

Student 1: Yeah.

Student 3: [nodding]

[pause in discussion]

Teacher: Talk more about that.

Student 3: Yeah, she planted…what are those things, again?

Student 1 and 2: [together] Lupines.

Student 3: Lupines, and they grew everywhere. And she went all over the world, like, to the desert and to the mountains, and a tropical ocean.

Student 2: But she got sick…

Student 1: … I think she got hurt; she fell off a camel. [Looks in the book to find that part]

Student 3: She didn’t even plant the lupines until she was back in her home after she got hurt.

Student 2: Why did she wait that long? Because that’s what the book is about, and she didn’t plant them until towards the end of the book, and that’s like the most important part of the book!

Student 1 and 3: [expressed agreement]

Teacher: Let’s explore that question some more.
