32 Reasons Why I Teach

\

by Danny Brassell

\

Tanisha hugs my knee and tells me she missed me, and Juanito repeats the knock-knock joke he has already told me 19 times over the past week. When we reach our classroom, Claudia closes the door. Students toss their backpacks in the cabinets and wave their homework in the air. Viridiana chooses the Debussy CD, and Salvador gingerly puts it in the CD player as if he were holding a precious glass vase.

“Cool bulletin board,” Hector shouts, and his table nods and asks if we are going to play new games today.

We form a circle to sing our morning chants, and I soon forget all about the grown-ups and remember the 32 reasons why I teach.

Today’s teachers need to put on their blinders and avoid the negative criticism that forces too many to leave the profession.

Remember: you make a difference every day.
