Interview NDHU ( National Dong Hwa University ) Professor

With junior students starting to plan their dream university and major to take , many faced obstacles and confusion toward graduation . The interview with Professor Li from the National Dong Hwa University of Taiwan will provide a different viewpoint toward university and could help junior and senior students to understand themselves and achieve their dream school .

Professor Li Guanling graduated from National Tsing Hua University in 2001 with a Ph . D . degree in Computer Science and Information Engineering . Within her academic career , she published multiple papers and one book called “ Introduction to Computer Science ” which is used as a textbook in other universities .
Further , Professor Li is in the Department of Computer Science and Infor of National Dong Hwa University . Professor Li currently is teaching students working to earn their Bachelor , Master , and Ph . D . degrees , and some courses she teaches include Data Mining , Introduction to Computer Science , Probability ,
and Recommender System . Times : How would you describe your teaching style ? Professor Li : A systematic guidance . For instance , in Recommender System course , I start by asking students to understand what the problem is , then explore possible solutions , then learn the mathematical models that can be used for these possible solutions , and ask students to put these ideas into practice and learn various ways to improve Finally , the students will put these ideas into practice and learn various ways to improve their performance . Times : Why are you interested in this position ? Professor Li : I chose this career because I liked to write programs at the beginning and experienced the fun of research after doing my graduation project in college . Times : What kind of person would be suitable for Computer Science major ? Professor Li : A logical person who is able to focus and enjoys learning new things . Times : What would you say to students who are curious about computer science major ? Professor Li : Continue to learn math well , develop your logic skills , and stay enthusiastic about learning new things Times : As a professor , what advices do you give to freshmen ? Professor Li : Maintain a positive learning attitude , listen and ask questions , and integrate into the new learning environment as soon as possible
Times : How would you ensure an active participation from students in your class ? Professor Li : Using classroom exercises and Q & A , simple exercises and Q & A are used to bring out the blind spots of thinking and then discuss the solutions . Times : How could students get professor notice and even remember them ? Professor Li : Attentive and active learning in class , such as sitting in the front row , answering actively , asking questions at the right time , etc . Times : What would you regard as the most challenging aspect of being an academic ? Professor Li : Doing research requires reading a lot of literature , discovering the merits of these proposed methods or arguments , and keeping a skeptical and challenging mind to come up with your own arguments or methods , and the whole process will be repeated over and over again , which I think is challenging and fun .
