Slowly , but surely , I was able to perform more strenuous physical activity and engage in longer cardiovascular activity . I found I had adopted a routine that , only 12 months earlier , would have seemed overwhelming and impossible to sustain . The small , daily movements translated into a giant lifestyle change I am able to maintain .
Moreover , as I exercised and lost weight my mental health improved . My confidence grew and my mind cleared . For example , routinely I wake up in the middle of the night thinking about a case , often worrying about something I did or forgot to do . Exercise helps with those mid-night frustrations . I started exercising first thing in the morning and it quelled my inner critic , gave me purpose , and allowed me to confidently start the day .
Committing to Building and Sustainability . Each day , I treat my daily movements as a continuum where the initial goal is to simply complete the first task . For example , when exercising , I focus on completing the warmup . Even if I am tired or unmotivated , I know if I can just complete the warmup , I can motivate myself to complete the remaining exercise . Similarly , once the exercise is over , I can embrace my daily work tasks and perform them , in sequence , without trepidation . I embrace the same process I utilize to complete my morning workout . Instead of focusing on completing every task , I identify which task I must begin first and complete “ the warmup .” Thereafter , I know , if I can finish the warmup task , I can complete , in sequence , the remaining outstanding tasks . While problems do often occur , so long as I focus on performing a series of small , daily steps , in spite of these problems , I know I will make large , meaningful gains .
So , that ’ s “ how I did it ,” in rather simple and unexpected terms . Pledge to perform daily movements and commit to building upon these movements . I encourage you to ask yourself , “ What small , daily movements can I make ?” Over time , you may find these small movements transform your life . Although I still do not have any real , objective health and fitness qualifications , my individual journey has taught me about how I can best embrace health and fitness , which has aided me in the practice of law .
