must play a critical role if we are to achieve the promise of our democracy : developing a pluralistic society that works .” 7 The author encourages institutions of higher education to “ become models of diverse institutions that function well .” 8 And as our bench and bar become more diverse , I am confident that our legal profession will also become a model of a diverse professional community that functions well and that contributes to the strengthening of our democracy .

As we celebrate the 400th anniversary of the first Thanksgiving with my family this November , I will give thanks for the blessings of togetherness bestowed upon us by our ancestors – the Saints , the Strangers , and the Native Americans – during the harvest festival four centuries ago . I will also give thanks for the countless benefits and richness that our mosaic democracy provides to our great nation , which can serve as a model of a successful pluralistic society for people throughout the globe .
