53 miles away on a dairy farm , took notice . “ My grandma dared my mom to send Gary a letter ,” said Findlay . “ A year later , they were married .”
Responsibility was learned early on . The farm , which produces primarily small grains such as wheat , soybeans , and corn , was the only source of income for the family of seven . With no hired laborers , Findlay was expected to help on the farm . “ I remember getting out of school a lot to help run the grain cart during corn harvest ,” said Findlay .

She was also expected to help around the house and with her four younger siblings . “ I didn ’ t like being so far away from friends my age , but I pretty much loved everything else about growing up on a farm .”
Findlay ’ s upbringing wasn ’ t solely focused on farming , far from it , in fact . “ Our parents pushed us to try a lot of things , and they definitely focused on community ,” said Findlay .
Growing up she played the piano and saxophone and sang in the school choir . She participated in speech and was a member of Family , Career and Community Leaders of America . Faith in rural communities and farm families is common and the Findlays were no different . “ Church was a big part of our life ,” she stated .
The family sang in church and played the piano . Findlay taught vacation bible school , Sunday school , and participated in Active Christian Teens . All of the Findlay children participated in 4-H , which brought the family to the Minnesota State Fair seven years in a row . “ We would all help work on each other ’ s projects ,” recalled Findlay . “ It was a fun experience .”
Findlay is on track to graduate with her juris doctor in the spring of 2022 . She is a member and past president of the Rural Practice Association . She is in her second year as treasurer for the Environmental Law Society and is a member of the Student Trial Lawyers Association and Phi Delta Phi . The Findlay family farm is in its third generation , with Findlay ’ s brother beginning to take over last year . “ I ’ m pretty proud of where I came from .”
