What Is An Exot ic Pet ?

What comes to mind when one thinks of an ? exotic pet ?? Some people think of a giraffe , perhaps a shrimp , an octopus , or maybe even a bird . Well , there are two definitions . One is the popular culture definition , and another is the legal definition in the United States .
First , let ? s look at the legal definition of an exotic pet . According to US Legal . com , the legal definition says that it is a pet that has a character and origin that is not native to the US . This basically means that , in the US , an exotic pet would be certain types of birds or other animals , ( Note : not the entire species ), that are not naturally found in the country . For example , a robin isn ' t an exotic pet , but a puffin would be . For health concerns of these pets , one must seek counsel from an " exotics veterinarian ." instance , a snake or an octopus . These pets may even be considered interesting . They may not require an exotics veterinarian or much of anything special , but they are not what we consider normal . For instance , in the United States there is nothing illegal about keeping an octopus , unless it ' s an endangered species , but having one might be considered different by the cultural definition , though . One of the reasons pets are considered exotic to us is because they have specific needs that may be hard to accommodate .
