of the Joint Procedure Committee , a standing committee of the North Dakota Supreme Court “ responsible for proposing adoption , amendment , or repeal of rules of civil procedure , criminal procedure , appellate procedure , evidence , and specialized court procedure .” She has also participated as a member of SBAND ’ s Volunteer Lawyers Committee since 2015 , and serves on the board of the Grand Forks Downtown Development Association ( 2017 to present ) and on the board of the Grand Forks Chorales ( 2020 to present ).
• Brad Myers , associate dean for Administration and Randy H . Lee professor of law , was appointed by Governor John Hoeven in 2007 as one of North Dakota ’ s Commissioners to the Uniform Law Commission , and he has served our state in this capacity since that time . His nationally recognized expertise in Trusts & Estates has led to his selection to participate on several drafting committees for Uniform Acts in this area of law , and , in 2017 , to his selection as a Fellow of the American College of Trust & Estate Counsel .
• Julia Ernst , associate dean for Academic & Student Affairs and associate professor of law , has been very active in a variety of leadership roles in SBAND , including serving since 2018 on the Women Lawyers Section ’ s Executive Committee and as chair of the Regional Networking Gatherings Committee , and as a member of the Leadership Committee for 2018-19 . Associate Dean Ernst regularly contributes her time and talents in important initiatives promoting North Dakota women ’ s judicial service , networking , and professional development . She has also been very active in the Greater Grand Forks Women ’ s Leadership Cooperative , an organization recently formed by former District Court Judge ( and now UND Law affiliated faculty member ) Debbie Kleven and Assistant Professor of Law Ariana Meyers .
• Tammy Pettinato Oltz , assistant dean for Law Library and Information Services and assistant professor of law , was appointed by Governor Doug Burgum in 2018 to serve
a three-year term on the North Dakota Library Coordinating Council . As noted in its website , the Council “ assists in planning , coordinating , and evaluating the services and programs of North Dakota libraries .”
• Paul Traynor , who joined our full-time faculty as an assistant professor of law in 2019 , has been an SBAND member since 1989 . He is active in the Business Law and Corporations Section and has presented on business law issues ; and locally , he performs as a cellist in the Greater Grand Forks Orchestra .
As these examples reflect , our UND Law faculty have been highly active and engaged in “ seeking to promote improvements in the law and legal systems , the legal profession , and the administration of justice ” in North Dakota , and in working for the benefit of our state and local communities . Both as a member of our faculty and now as Dean , I too have greatly enjoyed and appreciated the opportunities I have been provided to contribute to the common good of our North Dakota legal community .
One of my earliest areas of service involvement after I joined UND Law in 2010 , was providing trainings and other support for the Disciplinary Board of the North Dakota Supreme Court . As Dean , I am also proud to serve on the SBAND
Board of Governors and as a member of the Board of the North Dakota Bar Foundation , the North Dakota Judicial Branch Education Commission , and the MJI Committee .
But I wish to make special note of the great privilege I was afforded by then-Chief Justice VandeWalle when he appointed me in 2012 to serve on the Joint Committee on Attorney Standards , on which I am this year completing my third three-year term , including two as chair . His confidence and his early and continued support for me made a tremendous positive impact on my professional development at the UND School of Law , and I will always be grateful – as are countless others in North Dakota – for everything he has done to help me grow and flourish here .
The ongoing active engagement by our UND Law faculty with the North Dakota legal community flows in the currents of a long history and tradition established by legendary faculty such as Professor Randy H . Lee , Professor Emerita Patti Alleva , and so many others . I am fully committed to encouraging and supporting our faculty as they continue to be strong partners with the North Dakota bench and bar in public service and in making our state and local communities better from our combined efforts .
