YOUNG LAWYER SHOWCASE JAMES GROSSMAN ANDREW ASKEW Andrew Askew is an associate at Pearce Durick PLLC, where he practices commercial and business litigation, administrative law, and civil litigation. He also maintains a legislative lobbying and government relations practice in which he helps companies, associations, and non profits pursue their legislative interests and goals. James Grossman is an associate at the Nilles Law Firm in Fargo. He is a litigator focusing primarily on civil cases and adoption matters. Grossman grew up in Bismarck. After high school, he attended the University of North Dakota (UND) where he graduated summa cum laude with degrees in communications and honors. During the summer months in college, he worked as a carpenter and framed hundreds of homes in the Bismarck-Mandan area. After receiving his undergraduate degrees, he attended the UND School of Law, graduating with a juris doctor, cum laude, in 2016. Prior to law school, Askew obtained degrees in business management and English from Saint Cloud State University and the University of North Dakota (UND). He graduated from the UND School of Law and served as the outside articles editor for the North Dakota Law Review. In addition to participating in the law school’s internal moot court competition and many student organizations, he was selected as a legislative intern for the Senate Agriculture and Industry, Business, and Labor Committees. After law school, he served as law clerk to Justice Dale V. Sandstrom of the North Dakota Supreme Court. Askew currently serves as the North Dakota’s Young Lawyers Division Delegate to the American Bar Association House of Delegates, the Young Lawyers Section Representative to the SBAND Board of Governors, and as a board member of a local non profit. He is a proud native of Devils Lake. While in law school, Grossman served as the vice president of the Energy Law Association and participated in external Trial Team and Moot Court. He also served as a teaching assistant for the law school’s Trial Advocacy class. During the summers in law school, he externed with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Bismarck and as a law clerk at the Burleigh County States Attorney’s Office. He has remained active in supporting UND Law’s trial team by judging regional competitions. In his spare time, Grossman enjoys spending time with family and friends. He goes backpacking in the mountains, snow skiing, fishing, and hunting. FALL 2018 31
