hiatus. We heard loud and clear, especially
from students, the law school should
demonstrate, in a visible and meaningful
way, our commitment to inspiring students
to serve indigent and underrepresented
populations. So, when I heard about Legal
Services of North Dakota’s efforts to open a
Grand Forks office focused on community
redevelopment with the help of the Bank
of America settlement funding through
the North Dakota Bar Foundation, I saw
an opportunity. By allowing LSND to use
our Clinic office suite while the Clinic is on
hiatus, we helped bring down the cost of a
new LSND office, and we put the otherwise
empty space to excellent use for North
Dakotans in some critical areas, including
mortgage foreclosure prevention and related
legal services. We also asked LSND to
provide externships in the office for law
students, and they readily agreed. As a result,
while the Clinic is on hiatus, LSND can
better serve northeast North Dakota. As
our students walk through the law school,
they have a daily reminder of the legal
needs of the people of our state, as well as
opportunities to help meet those needs.
