This feature was inspired by Twin Peaks, a show that heavily inspired Team Silent during the making of Silent Hill. However, this may have been the product of another limitation in casting. In the 90s, most games had incredibly limited budgets and as such were scraping the barrel in the field of voice actors. This is why most voice actors at the time were nobodies in the industry and were not given much direction in their performances. To put it in perspective, the voice actor for Harry Mason, simply credited as Michael G, was a longstanding mystery until 2018.
Silent Hill despite its age remains one of the most influential horror games ever produced. Essentially existing in a technological limbo, where every aspect of its design aligns perfectly with the technology available then in order to provide a truly unique, horrific experience. My playthrough of it on the Duckstation emulator has been a truly amazing experience and one that I can wholeheartedly recommend to any fans of the survival horror genre. In recent times, the gaming industry has become obsessed with graphical fidelity and making games appear as life-like as possible, however, as games like Silent Hill show, you don’t need the absolute best graphics in order to convey something remarkable.
