Video Game Review: Super Smash Brothers
Super Smash Bros Ultimate (Ultimate) is possibly one of the most anticipated games of 2018.
The game was released on December 7, 2018 on Nintendo Switch, four years after the previous game. Ultimate amazed both fans and critics alike by further evolving the solid gameplay and formula of the earlier versions. An amalgamation of the fight and party game genres, this game has an array of characters from Nintendo and other companies. The previous title had a total of 58 fighters, while Ultimate has an astounding 74 characters, with 6 of those coming in the future as paid updates, ranging from the well-known Mario and Sonic to less popular characters such as Olimar from the Pikmin series. Much like the earlier games, players pick one of the many characters and compete against as many as 7 other computer players or some friends to make the opponent’s percent go up. The higher the percentage, the easier it is to launch them off of the screen which will cost them one of their lives. As simple as it is, Ultimate offers endless gameplay and fun with every match being different depending on the characters and opponents chosen. New to Ultimate is the addition of “Spirits” which are other characters from other series that players can equip to their fighters to give them extra buffs, furthering the fun chaos of the game. Spirits are completely optional and are used only if players turn them on in the rules or in the new story mode of the game, titled “World of Light.” In this
long and expansive mode, the evil Galeem, the Lord of Light, turns the playable characters into his minions, and everyone else into Spirits, and it’s up the last survivor Kirby to free everyone and defeat Galeem. As expansive as “World of Light” is, it can get rather repetitive and boring. Overall, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is possibly the best in the entire Super Smash Bros series and is a game that definitely lives up to its name.
