Statistically, 12 American children are killed every day due to gun violence. In the past 24 years, 380 school shootings have occurred in the United States, which has impacted over 350,000 students, according to Sandy Hook Promise. Many agree that increasing gun violence is caused by a lack of gun safety and control. Only 21 out of 50 states in America conduct background checks on gun owners, although some of these states only administer background checks on those purchasing handguns. Additionally, millions of families fail to properly store guns inside their homes, which has often led to tragic accidents among young children. For instance, Sandy Hook Promise has reported that 68% of gun incidents in school have involved a gun taken from the home. Ultimately, safety measures inside and outside the home can make America a much safer place.
The student activism club, Falcons for Change, recognizes the immense amount of gun violence and sympathizes with the victims. The measures that the United States can go through to protect the lives of children and citizens are large, but many have failed to be enacted. These consist of lawful background checks on every gun owner, a house visit which will make sure that the gun will be out of harm's reach, and a more rough and rigorous process in which a firearm can be purchased. As students, we can help with the stream of gun violence in the United States. We can do this by becoming advocates and demanding change.
