NHS Induction

2

Every year, a select group of Juniors and Seniors who show strong scholarship, character, service, and leadership are given a chance to become part of the National Honor Society (NHS), run by Mrs. Gerken and Mrs. Napolitano here at Saddle Brook High School. Before even being considered for membership, students must have a GPA of at least 3.7, and have a solid record of being a good student and person. As part of the application process, students must write a short but thorough essay about their beliefs and explaining how they have fulfilled the required community service and leadership hours. If students meet all of these standards and requirements, they are invited to become part of the NHS. The induction ceremony includes various speeches orated by senior members, Principal Mrs. Coffey, and Superintendent Mrs. Shanley. New members also receive a special pin and a yellow rose during the ceremony. New members sign their names in a book along with all of the other members of the NHS throughout the history of Saddle Brook High School.

Once the students become official NHS members, they are required to complete several hours of community service per month. Students meet this requirement by tutoring other students after school at least once a week. Members also attend monthly meetings and are required to retain a strong character and continue to do well academically. This is a tremendous milestone and the members must feel proud to be recognized after all of the hard work and commitment they have shown throughout their high school years.
