Coach Ciccone and Coach K invented grueling workouts ranging from 10 mile long runs to hill days, and trust me; running up and down a hill in ninety degrees weather is NOT an experience you want to have. All the hard work paid off as every boy and girl on the team ran a personal best at the season opener on September 7th. The boys continued to find success over the next couple of weeks medaling at the ‘Back to the Mountain Invitational’ and defeating various teams at the league meets. The girls also had a strong start taking multiple victories across the league. One of the team Captains, Steve Grullon, had this to say about the teams progress: “I’m proud of the dedication these guys have shown these last few months. It’s not easy to come out and run mile after mile every day but they tackled every practice with high energy.

The team dynamics this year have been great with everyone competing against each other and making each other better. I’m satisfied with how this season turned out.” The boy’s team had a strong season with an overall record of 5-3; taking 5th place at league championships. The girl’s team had an extremely successful season with a record of 6-2. They continued on to take 2nd place at the League Championship and 5th place at State Sectionals. They were the first SBHS Girls Cross Country team to qualify for the Bergen Meet of Champions in 30 years as well as the first to qualify for State Groups in 19 years! Both teams enjoyed successful seasons and we look to continue this success as we start Track and Field this winter.
