DOMINICAN MOTHERS GROUP SUPPORTS THE ORDER IN PRAYER By George Cervantes, Director for Advancement Services & Special Events Attendees of the Dominican Spring Gala may have noticed a special group in attendance for the past two years: the Mothers for Dominican Friars. Formed just last year, there are now seventy in the group. Mrs. Kathryn Langevin, one of the founding members, talks about this new group. What is “Mothers for Dominican Friars?” It’s a prayer group specifically for mothers of solemnly professed Dominican Friars within the Province of St. Joseph. Our patroness is Blessed Jane of Aza, mother of St. Dominic and Blessed Mannes. How did it form? In 2017, five mothers discussed the merit of such a group with Archbishop J. Augustine Di Noia (now our Spiritual Advisor), Fr. Dominic Legge, and Fr. Dominic Langevin. We agreed that the Faith & Reason - Volume V, Issue II group could be a powerful and supportive bond, one that we all desired. It took many phone calls and lots of prayers! How do you support the Dominicans? Each Tuesday, members pray the Rosary for their sons and all Friars of the Province, their families, all members of the Mothers for Friars, and for Dominican vocations. Once a month we pray the Dominican Rosary together during a conference call; afterwards, many mothers remain on the phone to chat, ask questions or share what’s going on in their life. We share our concerns, special intentions, questions; we learn to accept the surrender of our sons’ vocation. Because not all mothers of friars are Catholic, we help answer questions they have or guide them to the proper channel. So our support is based in prayer – not only for our sons but for ALL of the Friars. If possible, we attend events such as the Gala or ordinations to share in fellowship and community. Our unique love for our sons has grown to include their new family, the Dominican Order. The more we can learn of their lifestyle, ministries, and formation only enhances our love of our sons and their vocation to serve God.
