DOMINICAN PREACHING ILLUMINATES
POPE FRANCIS’ MESSAGE IN THE U.S.

bringing Dominican preaching
to thousands of men and women
in need of the Gospel.
During Pope Francis’ recent apostolic
journey to the United States, a novel
opportunity for the preaching of the
Gospel arose. At the suggestion and with
the help of two benefactors, Bridgett
Wagner and Diana Banister, some of
our Dominican faculty appeared as
commentators on television news
programs. Fr. Thomas Petri, O.P., Vice
President and Academic Dean of the
PFIC, and theology professors Fr.
Dominic Legge, O.P., and Fr. Dominic
M. Langevin, O.P., went on the air to
present a straightforward, Catholic
interpretation of what the Holy Father
was doing and saying in this visit.
Reflecting about his experience of
this preaching mission, Fr. Legge
mentioned what a great opportunity
this presented. Typically, a preacher
has a relatively small audience for
his preaching of the Gospel, but on
this occasion the friars could reach
many thousands of viewers, Catholic
and non-Catholic, who followed
Pope Francis during his U.S. visit. Fr.
Legge noted that the media is a “huge
megaphone that can be of service to
the proclamation of the Gospel.” He
