By KAELYN GUERIN HOUSE MADE REBRANDING TALKS CREATIVITY & BEING A BOSS IN HER OWN RIGHT Chevron custom-ordered baby blanket made by Kaelyn Guerin. Well. I’ve made the bed. And now I’m literally laying in it. The decision to become a stay-at-home mom may not always be as easy as my own. Years of longdistance courtship with my then boyfriend turned into over a year of marriage still not co-located with my spouse due to training. When it became obvious that I was pregnant (unplanned but certainly welcomed), there was no question that I would end my military career and exchange my captain duties for House Commander and Chief! So how does one reconcile the sense of empowerment a woman rightfully possesses when she is literally a boss in her own right, to what is seemingly a demotion to the role of maid, chauffer, head chef, and governess—the role of a housewife? Again, that’s easy. She gets creative! The name… “iiirdwind” spoke to my emotions at the time. While motherhood involves its own varied and lovely tapestry, I often found Kaelyn placed on a back burner, shimmering unnoticed and at the onset of boiling over. FAITH HEART MAGAZINE I 4 Tired and overwhelmed, even my second wind was already at odds with a hungry toddler, a laundry list of household chores, and a tired, aviator spouse. So when I was taught how to crochet from my endearing mother-in-law, Cindy, I was amazed! Here is this skilled craft with immeasurable capabilities, limited only by my own creativity and designs. What followed was even more amazing—folks were willing to buy it! Without thinking about it too much, I streamlined my products, bought professional branding, closed my eyes, and opened my Etsy shop. No quite an overnight sensation, but my shop is my separate creative space to be the creator all women are called to be. We were born to make! Whatever the final product or service may be, there is a call to action for females to embrace the spirit of entrepreneurship. In doing so, you may redirect negative energy, defy what a Marine looks like, or challenge what age group and demographic can be passionate about needlecrafts. The beds are made. And naptime is over! Kaelyn W. Guerin is former United States Marine Captain residing in the Low Countey of Beaufort, SC with her husband, Captain Brett Guerin (USMC), toddler son Theodore and dog Rusty. She is the owner and creator behind the Etsy shop, iiirdwind.
