Philippians 4:19 says,“ But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Many of us think that money is the answer to unexpected circumstances. When we instantly ask God for money to meet a need instead of asking God to meet the need, our faith is reduced, we dismiss God’ s creativity and believe it or not, we are operating in fear and trying to control the situation.
Earlier this year we celebrated my grandfather’ s 80th birthday; family members were asked to wear purple, black, or grey. I take pride in my family’ s appearance so right away I prayed,“ Lord send me some money to buy clothes for us.” God replied with a question,“ What do you need?” I said“ money.” God said,“ No you don’ t, tell me what you need.” I was baffled. After thinking for a while I offered the same response,“ money for clothes.” God showed me that the essence of my need was clothes, not money.
After shopping in my closet, I was able to put together fabulous outfits for me and my daughters! God revealed,“ When you understand and ask for what you really need and let God handle the means of meeting the need, you’ ll experience what Paul was talking about in Ephesians 3:20 which says,“ Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.”
God is creative in how He meets our true need, money is not always the answer to the unexpected bill or change in circumstances, there are far more options available. While recovering from surgery, preparing my middle daughter to leave home for college and working hard at building a business, my husband and I split and I became concerned about being able to manage things on my own. My oldest daughter was working and willing to contribute to the household but lost her job. Initially, my prayer response was to ask for more money, however, remembering the profound lesson learned earlier about abundance, I was refocused to what my true needs were- a nice paying job for my daughter, multiple streams of income through my businesses and resourceful ways to successfully manage the home. God does things in such an awesome way. The very next day after my daughter lost her job, she got a new job with a major cable company and one of the employee benefits of her job is free cable, internet, and phone services. God wiped out our $ 200 monthly cable bill! God opened up ways for me to effectively manage the home by adding additional income and removing a bill. That’ s the kind of God we serve; a God that will indeed supply all of our need. You’ d be amazed at the innovative ways God can meet your needs.
