P. Sloan Joseph: Describe how these scriptures have helped you in your life or what these scriptures mean to you?
Mary Sloan: Both of these scriptures are constant reminders of how God orders our steps in life through success and challenges. As humans, especially in my culture, we have been told by others( parents, friends, society) what our success should be. Do not believe that all things are evidence of weakness or failure, but evidence of why we need / should depend on God, and His power, daily in our life. I am constantly meditating on this and ask Him everyday to make me stronger in this area of life. He will guide us to our predestined place, regardless of what we feel or think, or how bad we might resist / fight His will.
P. Sloan Joseph: What do you currently do to nurture your relationship with God?
Mary Sloan: I am always evolving in my relationship with God. I claimed the role of“ worshipholic“ at one time. I was at every worship service, on every choir and participated in every ministry. I learned that some of the most powerful ways God teaches you about yourself and your relationship with Him is how comfortable or uncomfortable you are with telling others about HIM. This includes sharing your most intimate hurts and disappointments with those he leads you to talk to. He will put you in a place where you will testify to the most uncommon person of how His blessings and power have allowed you to overcome life’ s challenges. I ' m still growing in this area.
P. Sloan Joseph: Describe a difficult time in your life. How did God bring you through this situation?
Mary Sloan: One of the most difficult times in my life was when I was laid off. It was an awesome job opportunity, paid a salary that allowed me to live comfortably and take care of my daughter. I purchased a townhome three years prior and was planning to send my daughter to one of the most prestigious private HBCU’ s in the country. I was a Patient Revenue Manager for a large educational health institution. It was a wonderful opportunity, but God knows His child and knew what was best for me. The experience humbled me and taught me that just because you do right, does not mean challenging things will never happen. I was unemployed for eight months. This experience brought me closer to God. I had no other choice but to trust His plan for me. After bouncing back from this experience, I began to live life; traveled, and spent much needed time with family.
P. Sloan Joseph: How has God helped you in your relationship with your daughter?
Mary Sloan: It is amazing how people can see God in you, even when you have not verbally expressed your belief or your relationship with HIM. I have scriptures posted on my computer monitor for two reasons: 1. To remind me daily of his promises and who I represent. 2. To show others that come into my work environment, RESPECT WHOSE I AM!
P. Sloan Joseph: How would you explain God to an unbeliever?
Mary Sloan: I am a firm believer in that actions speak louder than words. I am constantly praying for discernment and clarity. With these gifts, you will be given the specific words, and the appointed place to connect with those that are ready to HEAR what you would like to share. I am very creative when I talk to others about God. You know He can be a comedian at times, and laughter is not only an easy way to connect with people, but is also an effective way to convey His message of life.
