The Light in the Darkness By Tanya Shearer “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all.” 1 John 1:5 On August 5, 2010, the San Jose gold and copper mine located in the northern part of Chile collapsed. Thirty-three Chilean miners were trapped 2500 feet below the surface in total darkness except for the lights on their helmets. They quickly managed to free themselves from their initial area of entrapment and made their way to what had been the entrance to the mine. Finding the entrance completely closed off, they made their way to an emergency shelter in another part of the mine. In the shelter, the miners found food rations intended to last for two to three days. Fortunately, there was respected leadership among the miners, including one minister. Not knowing when, or even if they would be rescued, they immediately implemented strict food and water rationing. Routines were created and followed, including prayer times of 12 and 6 p.m., led by the minister. Without a Bible, he shared the Word of God from his heart. On the surface, rescue teams began the daunting task of finding a way to rescue the miners. They faced the dilemma of not knowing where the miners were located, or Faith & Family | 25
