Outdoor Miniature Plants
When crafting your outdoor fairy garden, you want to consider using trees that are miniatures or dwarf conifers. These trees resemble the full-sized ones we have naturally growing in our own backyards. Other trees that would work well would be trees with small leaves that will not open into something much larger and take over the landscape. These trees include: Dwarf Mugo Pine, Jean’s Dilly Dwarf Spruce, Just Dandy Dwarf Hinoki Cypress, Sky Pencil Japanese Holly, and Miniature Juniper.
The best sort of bedding you can get for your outdoor miniature garden will be plants that boast small leaves and are also slow-growing. Avoid herbs for the same reason. Alpine plants, moss, ground covers, rockery and sedums are often your best bets. Recommended bedding plants include: Cranesbill, Irish Moss, Miniature Daisies, Platt’s Black Brass Buttons, and Small Hens & Chicks.
Both moss and succulents are also excellent choices for miniature gardens in general. Moss is a great bedding material to place the other plants upon, or simply use them as a beautiful filler for the garden. Succulents are often small and bursting with pops of green in just about any shade you can imagine, making them exceptional to place as accents in your garden to capture attention. Succulents come in all shapes and sizes and a lot of them have vibrant sections of colors, including pinks, yellows, and reds, that will really make your fairy garden feel magical. These can be used both indoors and outdoors; just be sure to mind your sunlight and watering habits carefully between the two.
In order from top to bottom: miniature daises, dwarf mondo grass, and zebra haworthia.
