Academic Advising @ EFSC
Over the last few years, there ' s been a shift in advising philosophy and design at Eastern Florida. In the past, advisors served in a transactional role— adding and dropping students, processing forms, giving hard-copy checklists, and referring students to other departments. Today, the advising approach is intentional, developmental, and relational.
Then: A Transactional Approach
• Registered students( add, drop, withdraw) with little discussion.
• Provided a static, hard-copy degree information checklist.
• Told students what to take every term.
• Referred students to another department if the question wasn ' t advising-related.
Now: A Developmental Approach
• Discuss the implications of adjusting registration with each student and empower their decision-making. Teach students to use myEFSC to adjust their schedules themselves.
• Discuss degree options and requirements directly with students, using myGPS for a realtime degree audit.
• Use myGPS to plan a student ' s degree across multiple terms— for bachelor ' s students, a full degree plan is created.
• Help students find answers directly. Advisors are cross-trained in admissions, financial aid, and general student services so they can assist without a referral.
This is a short list of how we are approaching advising at EFSC. Please also know there are multiple types of advisors reporting through different departments— each area has its own advisors. We do our best to assist students in every area; however, there are times we hand off to the appropriate department.

The advising website can answer most questions or guide you on how best to direct students. Students can connect with us multiple ways— walk-in, face-to-face appointments, and virtual appointments. We also offer group advising for new students needing to satisfy their advising hold.

One important requirement we are strictly enforcing: students must provide a picture ID at every meeting. Our college is committed to protecting our students.
