History of Shenandoah University:
Shenandoah University was founded in 1875, in Dayton, Virginia, as Shenandoah Seminary. In 1924, the
Virginia State Board of Education accredited Shenandoah as a junior college. In 1937, Shenandoah
Conservatory of Music became a separate corporation, and the institution operated as two entities under one
administration. In the mid-1940s, Shenandoah College became a full member of the Southern Association of
Colleges and Secondary Schools. The Conservatory was granted full membership in the National Association of
Schools of Music in 1944. In 1960, Shenandoah relocated to Winchester, 70 miles west of Washington, D.C., in
the Shenandoah Valley of Virgina. In 1974, the two existing schools were merged, creating Shenandoah
College and Conservatory of Music. The junior college became a four-year institution and was fully accredited.
Today, Shenandoah University's physical location consists of the Main Campus, located at 1460 University
Drive, Winchester VA. In addition to the Main Campus in Winchester, Shenandoah owns the 333 West Cork
Street Building, John Kerr Building, Medical Office Building II, James L. Bowman Building, Child Care Center, and
Health Professions Building. In July of 1993, Shenandoah made its first step towards creating The Northern
Virginia Campus. The Northern Virginia Campus is located at 44160 Scholar Plaza Suite 100, Leesburg, VA.
Shenandoah University is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and practices the highest ethical
standards in its interaction with the community and with students of faiths. Within a community of scholars,
Shenandoah promotes the welfare of the whole person by fostering a nurturing environment in which
students learn, grow, and flourish.
