Discipling the Next Generation
space that allowed and encouraged him to do so, but the
presence of a community that is able to speak into his life and
hold him accountable to his choices.
A Family Affair
After a few months of training, the DTS students prepared
for their outreach. They were sent out in two groups: one to
Indonesia and Malaysia, and the other to India and Nepal for an
eight-week outreach.
Although they understood that God’s mission is a ‘family
affair’—having been drawn to the Father—they now partner
with Him to draw others back home to Him. One of the teams
was to discover how challenging it could be to stay united as
a family, and how important it was to rely on God to empower
them to do so.
In Kolkata, India, the team was asked to lead a church
service. Despite meeting several times to pray and seek God
about the details for the service, they struggled to come to
an agreement about the message they ought to preach. In the
heat of the moment, they spoke rashly and unkindly to each
other. Although they eventually pulled through the service, the
incident left behind many unresolved hurts in their hearts.
As they refl ected on the incident, Joshua opined that if he had
to do it again, he would have “tried his best to support Daniel
(who preached the message) and give him the confi dence he
needed”. On the other hand, Daniel humbled himself to seek
forgiveness from the team as his hurtful words had broken the
team’s unity that day.
It was a deep, albeit painful lesson for them about the importance
of unity. They learned that it is the love that they have for one
another, not a good sermon, that draws people to God’s family.
A Fresh Start
All too soon, DTS came to an end on 13 December 2017. We
commissioned a group of youth workers into the church and
nations, to love and shepherd the next generation. While they
all go their separate ways, they are united with the same vision:
that the people they reach out to will come to know God’s heart
for them, and they will long to live out their calling as His sons
and daughters.
