What I Need To Know About Tile Molded, three-dimensional tiles in small-to-large formats can create texture and pattern when used with compan- ion two-dimensional pieces. This is especially dramatic in subtle white-on-white, or gray-on-gray installations. Decorative and hand-painted styles—some by indi- vidual tile artists—can be integrated into your overall tile design. If you choose to include a few such tiles (in fact, any insert or plaque), make sure sizes, not just colors, are compatible. Planning something special? Ask your retailer or designer to show you photos of tile projects they’ve done. During the planning, shopping phase, bring along a digital photo of the room you’re doing over. Whether it’s ceramic, porcelain, stone or any other tile, great looks are in the details. Grout lines. ■ What do you like, and what looks best? ■ Thick? Thin? None at all? (These are butted tight.) ■ What colors are available? Coordinating? Contrasting? Surface finishes ■ Matte? Satin? Shiny? Mixed looks are in vogue! ■ Aside from texture, think color. Ask yourself what mood or feeling are you trying to evoke. Calm? Bright? Excitement? Fresh? Warm? ■ What colors are your personal favorites? Cut out what appeals to you in magazines and start a file of “best looks.” (This works in all categories!) Bring home paint samples and live with them for a few days, along with the tile you’ve chosen. Light changes during the day and with the source. Decorating is easier when you choose both at the same time! (Like two colors? Keep the alternative for when it’s time to redecorate. You have only to change the paint for a coordinated, inexpensive makeover.) ■ Matte floors absorb light and make a room feel cozier. ■ Shiny floor make a room feel airy and elegant. ■ This applies to wood, tile and laminate, too.) Depending upon your budget, add a simple metal accent on the wall, or install a full medallion in an entryway or special space. Your retailer or designer can put your lay- out on a graph to scale.
