REMEMBER WHEN

“ You needed to work up an appetite , and I needed more to watch than this lake !”

“ Hold up a minute there , boys !” He said .
We stopped and looked at him . He got up out of his chair , walked over to his car , and opened the truck . He rummaged around a little , then pulled out a splitting maul . A splitting maul is like an ax , but the blade widens out to a heavy sledgehammer on the other end . The weight of a splitting maul is roughly three to four times the weight of a standard ax . He walked over to the last round and motioned us to stand back . He licked his thumb and checked the sharpness of the heavy blade . Then , with one swing of the maul , the round was split in half . Two more swings and it was quartered . Four more swings and it was all firewood ! Without a word , he walked back to his car , dropped the maul back into the trunk , and returned to his chair .
Terry and I had been speechless watching my Dad smoothly take care of that last round .
Mom had just stepped out the door carrying two bottles of beer and a plate full of sandwiches . Dad , knowing what we were thinking , spoke up .
“ You needed to work up an appetite , and I needed more to watch than this lake !”
We all started laughing as Terry and I accepted the beer and sandwiches . This was “ Campground entertainment at its best !”
MY STORIES ARE ALL ABOUT A LIFETIME OF GOOD BAD AND FUNNY CAMPING AND RV ADVENTURES . — Paul Cox
Inspired , Paul and Sharon began to collect documentation written by their ancestors in family bibles , on the backs of pictures , newspaper articles , and obituaries . Using that information , Paul wrote his first book , “ Sparks of Memory ”. It was published in late 2021 and will be followed by a second book , “ Embers of Memory ” in the summer of 2022 . Stay tuned for his newest endeavor , a seven book series that follows a fictitious family , closely resembling his own , on a nearly 250 year journey beginning in 1770 England to present day Washington State .
