REMEMBER WHEN started leaving the nest . By 1985 , the two oldest had moved out of the house and into college dormitories . The younger three were getting involved in other activities , and suddenly , the house began to feel way too big . We felt the need to find something smaller , so we put the big house up for sale .
That was when we found the nice little house by the water . It was perfect , we thought , so we bought it . We remained in that house for another 14 years . Long enough for all of the children to leave home and begin lives of their own . By 1998 , we were alone in our home . It was the first time in our 26 years of married life that we didn ’ t have children living with us . We were quickly getting antsy and succumbed to a pattern that almost seemed urgent . There was no holding us back . The trend to move was still there , as it had been our entire lives , nagging at us . The time was right . We were both now retired . It was time to hit the road as Full Time RVers !
My point in relating all of these changes in our lives is that we have both been moving from place to place our entire lives . Trading our stick-built house for
a big rig and the full-timing lifestyle was a natural move for us . No big deal … Let ’ s do it again !
That was then , and this is now . Since 1999 , we were full-time RVers for four years before selling the big rig and purchasing yet another stick-built house , this time in Aberdeen , Washington . We bought a 27-foot Prowler travel trailer almost immediately , so we didn ’ t have to give up the travel bug . We had been in that house for eleven years when we were invited to move in with our oldest son . He and his husband had purchased a massive house on two acres , and our rent for having our own private 1000 square foot apartment on the ground level would simply be to share utility expenses . It was an offer we couldn ’ t refuse . The apartment was unfinished , and we were free to do with it as we wished . So we hired a contractor to gut it and rebuild it using our own design . A year later , we sold our house and the Prowler travel trailer and moved into our new custom-built apartment . That was in 2015 , and we are still there . This will be our retirement home , and we have no intention of ever leaving it . We ’ re too old now to make that kind of move again . However , we didn ’ t lose our travel bug . We ’ ve recently purchased a Class C motorhome and , even in our twilight years , we are spending as much time as possible on the road .
Not everyone will experience that “ Urge to g ”’ in the same way . For some , it will be a huge leap . For Sharon and me , it ’ s been just like stepping over that crack in the sidewalk . Our entire life and lifestyle have truly been “ a moving experience !”
