flying our new flag

This term, myself and the boys have been busy preparing and subsequently achieving GREEN FLAG STATUS. It was a proud moment for me as we have been working towards getting the award ever since I joined the school. As a Green Flag Secondary School we join the elite in sustainable living; we aim to promote a more sustainable lifestyle to pupils, parents, governors, staff and the local community.

Give as much effort as possible to waste as little as possible.

Reuse plastic bottles, bags and paper as much as possible.

Energy. Switch off monitors, lights or any other devices when not in use.

Encourage others to walk and cycle to school.

Never leave litter lying around.

As a biology teacher, I am aware of the wonders of evolution and the devastation of extinctions due to Natural Selection. However, it is my strong belief that our current materialistic way of living is preventing organisms from even having a chance of survival!

We need to defend the interests of those whom we've never met and never will. Increased incidences of natural disasters, such as typhoon Haiyan and the wettest January since records began has meant misery for millions of people, and this will not stop unless WE start doing something about it.

It is not just about relying on the government to put in processes and laws, or the big corporate companies to change their ways… It is about you and me. We have the power to change things one step at a time. Sustainable living, is all about ‘sensible living’ – it just makes sense to:

Buy local… use your green grocer more.

Reduce, reuse & recycle as much as you can.

Start growing your own vegetables or plant a fruit tree in your garden.

Turn off your computer (not just standby)

Turn off lights when not in the room

Mrs Pruden-Lawson

Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of the E-Zine magazine. I am Ryaan, the President of the Sustainability Committee this year, and I would like to welcome you to this seasonal edition of the magazine.

This fun packed issue contains many useful articles for the holiday season, including seasonal recipes, a guide on how to grow your own vegetables and the difference between real and plastic trees. We even have a facebook profile for the chickens that we keep at the school!

Before you get into the magazine, I would just like to talk a bit about why I think sustainability is an important issue that everyone should take seriously. I believe that sustainability is the most important issue of this century, and unless we manage the worlds’ resources properly, it has the potential to impact every aspect of our lives, such as our lifestyle, our health, the food we eat, our environment and our future.

The most alarming thing about the issue is that this change is taking place relatively slowly, and as we don’t realize the scale of the danger as we keep adjusting to it. It’s like the frog and the pot of hot water analogy. If a frog jumps into a pot of hot water, it will jumps straight back out. However, if a frog sits in a pot of cold water that is heated up slowly it will stay there, unaware of the gradual change in its surroundings. We all need to do something to pull ourselves out of this situation because if we just carry on the way we are the consequences could be dire.

We all have a part to play in the solution. We can’t rely on the government or the industry to solve these problems as we as the consumers are the ones with the real power to make a difference.

Thank you for taking an interest in the issue of sustainability, and I hope you enjoy this issue of the E-Zine.
