While money is getting tighter for many people some are trying to turn to becoming a little bit more independent of the stores and others for the supple of some common things. One of the common things that some people are starting to become self reliant on is eggs and chickens. However, some people do not realize the benefits of having chickens in your back garden.

What you will need:

• Chickens

• Some hay and/or wood shavings

• A coop (often comes flat packed)

• Chicken feed

• Feeders and water feeders

• Corn (bird seed will do just fine)

Getting your chickens

You can buy chickens from farmers or you can get rescue chickens which have been taken in when large battery farmers get rid of their chickens. Many people may find this distressing as very often these chickens have very few feathers and can be aggressive and not ideal for keeping. However after a few weeks to two

months their feathers grow back and once you gain their trust can be very friendly. One thing that you must do or get the farmer whom you buy them from to do is to clip their wings, it is s common misconception that it is painful for the chicken however this is not the case.

Preparing for your chickens

It is a good idea before you get any chickens that you read multiple articles such as this and go on the internet as there are forums that you can go to where there is lots of helpful, more in depth information on the ins and outs of keeping chickens. Generally if they are being kept in a garden then I would advise you to fence off an area for them, it is also a good idea to have a proportion of border or bare earth as they enjoy digging.
