Ramadan Sharing Fridges By Sophie Booth The concept of Ramadan sharing fridges first came about in 2016, aiming to provide people in need access to free food and drink throughout the month of Ramadan by people in the local communities donating food and beverages. The initiative, which is licensed under the patronage of the Emirates Red Crescent and Islamic Affairs & Charitable Activities Department (IACAD), started on the first day of Ramadan and so far more than 100 fridges have been registered throughout Dubai. The average fridge will cater for more than 150 people and is in need of daily donations. What to donate? Many food and drink items can be donated, however the Ramadan sharing fridges cannot accept hot food and prefer to have items in individual packaging. Some popular items include: • • • • • • Bottles of water Cans of soft drink Bananas Oranges Biscuits (small packets) Carrots • • • • • • Cartons of juice Laban Apples Watermelon (pre-packed) Cucumbers Bread rolls To find out more information about how to get involved and donate to the Ramadan Sharing Fridges you can join the Facebook group Ramadan/Sharing Fridges in the UAE, and like the Ramadan Sharing Fridges page.
