Working in
Partnership with Parents
By: Ashlee Steward
Working with parents is an important relationship and will encourage parents to share valuable
information about their child’s development.
Key points:
Open and honest feedback on a daily basis
Welcoming atmosphere where parents feel valued
Support TAs in sharing information with parents
Encourage parents to become involved with their child’s learning
Make positive suggestions on how you can work together
Be responsive to parents’ concerns
Communication both with parents and other members of staff
Find appropriate times to discuss sensitive issues
First Impressions
First impressions are an important part of building trust with new parents. As practitioners, you
have a shared responsibility to ensure all families are made to feel welcome from their very first visit,
including their tour and admissions process. Most parents may feel slightly apprehensive on their
first visit. You must always be aware of this and endeavour to make the parents feel comfortable and
welcomed into the nursery.
It is the responsibility of all managers to ensure staff receive appropriate training in working with
families.
