School Readiness By: Kathryn Beaney Many of our children will be moving from nursery and starting school in September and we have been working with these children, supporting and encouraging them as they learn and develop. It is important that they are now ready to move into the next chapter of their life. Below is a list of skills that will be important for the children. You may want to add some more, but in these last few weeks we can focus on ensuring that children are ready for the transition ahead of them. Independence – children need to be able to do things for themselves such as be able to use the toilet and wash their hands. During lunch time they will need to unpack their lunch, eat independently and then put everything back in their bag afterwards. Dressing – this is important for PE, try having a day when the children bring in some gym clothes and practise changing for a gym session. They also need to be able to keep their clothes together so that they can find them again afterwards. Social skills - working with others will be a vital skill for them throughout their school life - are the children able to make friends, take turns, share and play with other children? Rules of the classroom – can the children follow simple rules and instructions? They will need to be able to listen to their teacher and sit for a short while on the carpet. Are they able to sit and concentrate on an activity? School work – are the children ready to learn and confident to try new activities, can they mark make, form and recognise some words, do they know some shapes, count and recognise numbers, how is their hand – eye co-ordination? Remember to work with both parents and schools O ffice 2606 | Ta m e e m H o u s e | B a r s h a H e i g hts | D u ba i Ph on e : +971 4 2766737 | a d m in @ eyes- m e.co m | a d m i n @ qu e s t-me. e d u c ati o n | w w w. e ye s -me. co m | w w w. qu e s t- me.educ ati on
